Family Night

On Friday Daniel suggested that we have Family Night and rent Prince Caspian (since Mara lovvvved Chronicles of Narnia and we had a coupon for a movie for $1.99).

Daniel was tired, having not slept on Thursday night/Friday morning when we had no power. So when he got home from work, he took a nap for an hour and suggested I walk to Blockbuster with the kids and rent the movie.

“You took Corban and Mara to Blockbuster last weekend, right?” I asked. “You didn’t have any problems? With the stroller?”

“No! I didn’t have any problem at all!”

The double jogging stroller fits a lot of places. But not all places. And it’s always hard when you find out it’s not going to fit, after you’ve already loaded up the kids and walked there.

So with confidence I walked to Blockbuster, and backed into the store with my double jogging stroller. It just barely fit–but like Daniel said, ‘no problem at all!’ (The only “problem” I had was that someone had reported my Blockbuster card “lost or stolen,” rendering it unusable. But we worked through that one.)

After checking out the video, I turned to leave, and my stroller would not fit out the door. I tried backwards, forwards, at an angle. The guy who checked out my video was trying to help, and I said, “This is crazy! My husband came here last weekend with the stroller, and he told me it was no problem at all.”

Before I knew it, there were four Blockbuster “assistants” lifting the stroller in the air saying to the kids, “It’s like a ride–at the amusement park!” Finally they tilted the stroller at just the right angle so we made it out the first glass door. One of the salesclerks was saying, “I hope it fits through the next door, because otherwise you’re stuck in there.”

Fortunately it went right through the second door, just like it did when we came in. . . And one of the guys called, chuckling, “You can tell your husband it was no problem at all!”

What an ordeal!!! I was thankful the guys were so helpful–but glad to get out of there!! . . . and no, I didn’t take pictures.

When I got home and related the incident, Daniel said he never went in Blockbuster. He just dropped off the video in the dropbox. He didn’t realize I was asking whether the stroller fit in the store . . .

On to family night. . .  We had grilled chicken caesar salads. Then we had ice cream. Micah loves ice cream! We can’t ever feed him fast enough–especially something he likes so much!

We tried watching the movie with Micah but he does not sit still. Ever. His goals were: climb over the back of the couch, land on the family, crawl off the couch, and go back around and do it again. . . Once we put him to bed, the movie was more enjoyable. That was when I actually started watching.

Mara had fun eating popcorn with Mommy and Daddy. And she loved the movie! At the first sighting of Lucy, Mara shouted, “Mommy and Daddy, I found Lucy!” Then she waved at the screen. “Hi, Lucy!” she called.

Now and then, I want time to freeze so I can somehow preserve the moment.

Maybe that’s why I blog . . .

Monkey See, Monkey Do

Micah has begun imitating Mara. A lot.

Here she was drinking her sippy cup. So he drank out of his sippy cup.

Mara began shaking her sippy cup.

So Micah began shaking his sippy cup.

When Mara realized he was imitating her, she kept taking drinks, then stopping to shake up her cup–just to watch Micah do it.

Oh, and he is not actually standing. Mara is standing. Micah is leaning against the wall, which gives the visual impression that he’s doing the same thing as Mara . . .

Crazy little monkey! 🙂

Riding “Bikes”

Mara recently observed, “Daddy has a bike. I have a bike. Now Mommy needs a bike!”

Actually Mara’s “bike” is a tricycle, and since the neighbors gave her the Dora tricycle, we now have two tricycles. When they first offered the trike, I thought, ‘No, thanks. We already have one.’ But then I realized, I suppose it’s good to have two, since we have two kids!

When Corban is here, it still works out because Mara likes to ride on the back of the trike, letting Corban do all the work.

Not to be outdone, Micah “runs” around the house, pushing the other trike, since he’s not yet big enough to sit on it and pedal.

They have fun “riding bikes.”

Recent Reality

Blogs often present the “perfect little world.” Well, here’s my reality.

I’m the mom . . .

  • Who had to add a pair of sunglasses to the shopping cart at Target today after my daughter broke off one of the legs (Thankfully the manager said we didn’t have to pay for them!)
  • Who rescued my 13-month-old son, who lay in a crying heap under the double stroller, which he had pulled over on top of himself, as it stood folded up in the living room
  • Who has been unable to sleep the past few nights because my crazy eczema has been out-of-control!
  • Whose daughter cried at the water park because (of all tragedies) she got wet!
  • Whose 13-month-old son climbs up the slide by himself now (So if you see me climbing up the slide? . . . Look for a little person in front of me! I’m chasing him).
  • Who was freaking out (a little) after my son’s head went underwater (5 times) during his bath last night (I was there on my knees next to the tub the entire time, scooping him up every time he slid into the water), and was rebuked by my 2yo daughter’s quiet yet earnest response: “I’m sorry, Mommy. Let’s pray about it.”
  • Who turned around after washing my hands in the bathroom to see the same little guy reaching down to splash in the pottyBigSlidePanic
  • Whose daughter seems to be potty trained, yet one day this week wet herself 4 times
  • Whose daughter threw her hairbow (that matched most of her outfits) in the grass at Far Away Park, in an apparent (unsuccessful) scheme to return to the park later that night
  • Who felt the instinctive motherly panic that I’ve often witnessed in other moms as my 2yo daughter ascended 11 steps to the top of the big slide . . . I promise, it seemed so much higher in real life . . .
  • Whose same daughter held up slide traffic at the park, as she stood on the ladder saying, “I’m not a baby, Mommy! I’m a big girl! That girl said I was a baby, but I’m not a baby. I wear underwear now, not diapers!”

Yep, that’s my reality . . .

Wow! A Pair of Jack And Lily Shoes for Micah!

Cent Saving Mom over at www.morethancents.info recently hosted a “review and giveaway” of a pair of Jack and Lily shoes!

I entered the contest–as I enter many contests!–thinking ‘that would be cool,’ but not really expecting to win. . .

JackandLilyShoesFor our entry, we had to go to the website and select our favorite pair of shoes. (How fun!)

I totally loved all the shoes, and it was a hard decision, because I imagined my 2yo daughter, the girly-girl, who wants to take home every cute pair of shoes she lays eyes on (including asking strangers if she can take their shoes home).

But then there is my 13-mo-old son. He has never had–and really needs–a pair of quality shoes that will stay on his active little feet while he’s learning to walk! So I decided to go with the “Jack and Lily brown solid (524)’A solid classic’ A modern take on a classic. A solid brown shoe with pipe stitch on upper and strap. Black sole.”  So handsome. For my little man. And he wouldn’t even care while my daughter (if she knew) would be soooo disappointed I didn’t pick a pair for her. . .

Well, tonight I got the e-mail! and read the contest results:

“Congratulations are in order to a lucky MTC reader who had just as much trouble deciding which pair of Jack and Lily shoes were her favorites as I did! Not only did our lucky winner have to pick her favorite pair she had to decide if she should choose shoes for her son or daughter. In the end she decided to go with these classic brown shoes with pipe stiching for her son who is learning to walk. I’m sure this lil’ man who will soon be on the go will look great sporting these soles.”

I couldn’t believe it!! Micah is going to have his own little pair of Jack and Lily shoes!! I ordered 18-24 month size to be sure he hasn’t already grown out of them. Besides, these will be perfect for fall and winter!

So this is just an encouragement to enter those giveaways  . . . you just never know!
